Setting Temperature for the Nevzorov Probe

Ground Testing

The Nevzorov probe can be ground tested by setting the temperature to 70 C. Turn the control box on (just the control box switch not the heater switch). Check the voltage outputs, everything should be positive. Spray water on the Nevzorov probe head. Check for a response for the liquid and total water content on the M300 display. Change the temperature back to 110 so it is ready to fly.

Calibration

Most of the calibration for each sensor head has been done by the manufacturer. On the calibration data sheet, the physical dimensions of each sensor (diameter, length, and surface area for LWC sensor and diameter and surface area for TWC sensor). Each time the sensor head is changed, the surface area should be updated in the N555DS_constants.pro file in the post-processing and in the formulas for real-time processing. The Ncol and Nref values NEED to be updated each time a new sensor head is used. See the page Setting Temperature for Nevzorov Probe for more information about this.

To calibrate the k constant that corrects for pressure and airspeed effects, use the nevzorov_cal script in the ADPAA library. Required input for nevzorov_cal are the *.analog.raw, *.basic.raw, and *.physical.raw files. Optional, but recommended, input includes the start and end times for the calibration. The start time should be after the Nevzorov probe has been turned on. There should be zero condensed water (liquid or ice) measured within the calibration time frame if at all possible. Since this calibration is dependent on the indicated air speed, make sure all airspeed edits are done prior to the calibration. Updated constants should be updated in the N555DS_constants.pro file.
