Windows OS - Additional Useful Software for Atmospheric Sciences

There is a lot of additional software for the Windows OS that is typically used in our department. Below is a list with information on how to install it.

7-Zip

Open source Windows utility for manipulating archives. Download

Adobe Reader

Adobe Reader is a pdf file display program. Download

Chrome

Chrome is an open source web browser. Download

Firefox

Firefox is an open source web browser similar to Internet Explorer. Download

Googleearth

Googleearth is display package that allows 3-D viewing of the earth. Download

IDL

IDL is a scripting programming language. The install software is located on the Atmospheric Science common drive, aero3.aero.und.edu/atmos, under software/IDL. You should probably select to install the “High Resolution Maps” during installation. The LM_LICENSE_FILE variable needs to be defined to be 1700@flex.aero.und.edu so you can access the license. For Windows XP, Open the Control Pannel <start><Settings><Control Pannel>. Open System Properties and the Advanced tab. Select the Environmental Variable button and define the LM_LICESE_FILE variable. Local installation files and further instruction are available at http://learn.aero.und.edu/pages.asp?PageID=162649.

Libre Office

Libre Office is a open source documentation creation set of software similar to Microsoft Office. Libre Office is fork of Open Office. Download Also, add in the "Read Text" extension to LibreOffice, see

Microsoft Office

The Scientific Computer Center is able to install the latest version Microsoft Office.

Putty SSH Client with Xming

Putty is an SSH client that enables terminal connections to networked computers. You can download Putty from http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/undhelp/downloads/softwaredownload.htm.

Real VNC

Real VNC enables full display graphical connections to networked computer. Download

VLC Media Player

Open Source Multimedia Framework and Player. Download

Windows Subsystem for Linux

The Windows Subsystem for Linux runs most command-line tools, utilities, and applications directly on Windows without the overhead of a virtual machine. Additional information is available online.
