MODIS Data

The following steps are used t acquire MODIS data from the Aqua satellite MYD06_L2.

1. Go to the NASA MODIS website to search for the data you wish to have.

2. Click on the first drop bar and select “Aqua MODIS”.

3. Click on the second drop bar and select “Aqua Atmosphere Level 2 Products”.

4. In the box labeled “Temporal Selection” There is an option to set the date range for the data you wish to collect. Note that there is a delay before data is published so it may be unavailable if the current date is within a week or two of the requested date.

5. Under the “Collection Selection” drop bar, select “51 MODIS Collection 5.1 - Selected Atmos and Land Products”.

  • If Collection 6 is available, use that instead.

6. In the box “Field Selection”, select the drop bar and go to “Latitude/Longitude”. This opens anther option to specify the region you wish to select. Note that the search will return any data that falls within the specified region. Ex: For Grand Forks, selecting “Center Lat/Lon, Delta Lat/Lon” will allow you to center the search region on the Grand Forks 47 Lat and -93 Lon, and then enter a delta of 3 degrees in either direction.

7. Next Choose our coverage selection. For our purposes, we are only flying during the day so that's the only data we will need.

8. Change any Metadata options you feel are necessary. In most searches there won't need to change it.

9. Click on search at the bottom and a list should appear of all available data. Preview the images before selecting them to make sure they cover the area you wish to have covered. Once satisfied with these files, click order now.

10. Next you will need to give an email to which the data should be sent. Keep “FTP Pull” as the delivery method. Click on Order and the data link will be sent to your email once your request has been processed.
