Troubleshooting

The IRIS (Interactive Radar Information System) has an automated monitoring system for which any errors that occur within the system should alert you. This monitoring acts as a watchdog, which constantly monitors the health of the system. If a problem arises, IRIS alerts users who should alert maintenance technicians. The comprehensive systems tools in IRIS provide an easy route for maintenance personnel to fix the problem. If you look under the radar status menu, you will see that IRIS collects all of the hardware and software states, as well as any key controls into a single place. You may connect to the radar status menu to view any systems and any errors in the network. When a problem arises, the IRIS watchdog process sends an alert pop-up or even a voice synthesis, is so desired, message. The BITEX-Utility is used to configure what parameters are monitored and the severity of the messages. In the event of a power loss, these messages are logged onto a disk in the IRIS message log to keep records.

Installation Errors

  • When updating to IRIS 8.08, a small sector of data is missing in each of your PPI’s. What is wrong?(This issue should not be of any concern for the users of IRIS in any UND machine. Since the current version of the IRIS (as of this writing) is v8.11.0.

A serious bug was found in the 8.08 version of the software. Reingest was missing the last rays for each sweep. If you purchased this version, please reinstall the patch from the ftp site. Raw products are made on the original IRIS are ok, however if any raw product was made on other machines, there will be some missing data until this patch is reinstalled.

  • While upgraded your Linux system to RHEL 3 and now rsh gets errors and fails to Hewlett-Packard computers. What is wrong?(The earliest version of RHEL in the CH422 computer lab is RHEL 4, and all the computers are DELL. So, user of IRIS shouldn’t encounter this error in anyway.

The RHEL Linux has a problem with kerberos rsh and rcp as follows: 1-) rsh does not work at all to HP-UX 10.20 machines. 2-) rcp gets a warning message to all platforms. There are two sets of r* commands installed on those systems. The commands in /usr/bin work fine the old way. For SIGMET systems it is recommended that you remove the kerberos path from your PATH as follows: # chmod 111 /etc/profile.d/krb5.sh Then log out and in.

  • If you install IRIS on your RedHat 8.0 system and some of the text in various IRIS menus is blank. What is wrong?(Users of IRIS recommended to use at least RHEL 4 as their operating system in order not to encounter any system specific problems outside the IRIS software.)

RedHat 8.0 seems to ship with a broken language. Check this with the “locale” command. Everything should be set to “en_US” for US English. If you see “en_US.UTF-8” it is broken. Fix this by editing your /etc/sysconfig/i18n file. Change the LANG line to read “LANG=“en_US”.

  • When upgrading to IRIS 7.29, and receive the error message “Could not generate the requested phase sequence”. What is wrong?(This error doesn’t apply to us, since the current version of IRIS is v8.11.0

This is the result of yet another bug. It only happens on systems with RVP7 V24 PROM's, IRIS 7.28 or 7.29, and a Magnetron transmitter. The system is working fine; it is the error message that is wrong. There are three ways to remove the error: 1)In the RVP7 TTY setup, MC section, set question “PHOUT(0:7)” to “XMTPhase”. This option is not available to customers who are using those lines for AFC. 2) In IRIS setup, RVP section configure the system for: Transmitter type: Klystron, XMT has phase control: No 3) Install a newer RVP7 code version.

Other Errors and Usage Help

  • If you have trouble starting the IRIS host:

An IRIS window may already be opened. If you see the messege “Sorry, IRIS can not be (re) started while these are active”, this is your problem. that means there is an active IRIS session running on your system.

  • If there is currently not an IRIS window open:

Type in the command prompt window “iris &”.

  • If you cannot connect to the radar you want:

You need to sit at the computer to you wish to connect to. For example, if you are seated at RADAR2 (check the top of the computer for this headline) you need to connect to RADAR2 under the connect menu. If you need to connect to the radar on the 6th floor of Clifford Hall, select RADAR1.

  • If a real time display window is not on the desktop:

Under the IRIS system, find the Menus dropdown and then select Real Time Display.

  • If the display options provided in the quick look window are not what you desire:

You may change a lot of parameters in the configuration of this software. To do so, try changing the font color, or change a reflectivity display to a velocity display. The icons located on the right side of the display are where most of these changes can be made.

  • What if I want the errors in the message summary to go away?

Restart the IRIS system by typing: qiris in the command prompt followed by typing siris. Errors will still appear if they have not been fixed.

  • What if I can’t configure a product?

Before you configure any product, the task that you selected has to be run at least once. You may select the task name by clicking on the icon next to the task name and selecting the appropriate task.

  • What if the PPI task won’t run?

Check to see that there is a PPI task listed in one of the available scans. If it is not there, right click in the window under the task column and select the PPI task. Also check to make sure that under the radar status menu, the menu for radiate is set to On or Auto.

  • What if I can’t view a display on another workstation?

Displaying a product in a window on another workstation may cause problems. Check to see that both workstations are turned on. Also check the network connection, as it may be turned off. You will also run into problems if the user that is logged in to the other computer does not authorize anyone to view their displays. Check with the user if this is the problem. If none of these issues are the problem, go to a window terminal in the other workstation and type xhost. Then return to the host computer and type restart_iris.
