Sales Tax on University Purchases

The University is not required to pay sales tax on purchases. However, it typically takes a sufficient about of time to not be charge for purchases when going to a store. Talking with people at stores, like Menards, and they all have a long application form that each purchase card holder needs to fill out to obtain a special tax exempt number for that company. There is no general tax exempt number that can be used. Likewise, this would need to be done at each store that a purchase is made by the purchase card holder. It is generally not worth the time, which would run into hours per store to do this for a low number of purchase and low amount of sales tax charged. Hence, it is a waste of time and resources to get the sales tax changes removed in many cases.
