ITASCA

  • Project Name: ITASCA (Instrument Testing And System Checkout Aircraft)
  • Start Date: January 15, 2010
  • End Date:
  • Aircraft: Citation II
  • Aircraft ID: N555DS

Punch List (In Order of Importance)

Hardware (Short Term)

  • The image noise seems to be related to the cabling in the aircraft; however, it also increases with time after the probe is on so it me be related to elements within the probe heating up.
    • Task: Fix the problem with image noise on the 2DC.
  • Bench Test the PCASP pump on April 28. Works fine. Will look into the software switch to make sure it is correct. Test PCASP in aircraft on April 21. Could not hear pump when turned on with software switch. Need to pull from PMS can and test using ground cable to see if pump comes on.
    • Bench tested, determined bad relay, ordered a solid state relay-Newark p/n 93k7598, Crydom - model S228. Pump up and running. Will install and test probe in canister on jet for verification.
      • Found PCASP test cable. Aaron will pull the PCASP and test on the bench to see if we have voltage and if the pump works
        • Need to make a test cable and do a ground check.
          • Task: The PCASP pump is not turning on.
  • New pressure transducer has been installed in the aircraft. A/D spec sheet has been update.
    • Located connector for xdcr and will calibrate if there are issues w/ existing one.
      • Task: Check Inlet Pressure wire on A/D. No measurement during March 26, 2010 flight.
  • Check on the LED for the TAMDAR Transmitter to see if we have on and where it located. See if we can get it in the cabin. Spoke w/ Kirk about this, he and Chad will come over this week to review the installation and see if they can do it depending on their work load. Installed the p/c communications switch into luggage compartment. Found pins 1&2 of power connector on Tamdar 6000C reversed. Switched out and now LED is bright,Still need to bring the jet outside for testing. Still need to bring the jet outside for testing. Chad in avionics is installing another LED in luggage compartment for power / lock verification.
    • Test the TAMDAR outside on April 28. AirDat reports no satellite lock. Will work on getting LED in a location were we can easily see if locks onto the satellite.
      • A lose connection has been found in the TAMDAR Transmitter setup. May of fixed the problem. Need to test outside.
        • TASK: Fix the TAMDAR so it is transmitting data to the satellite. Installed LED for an indicator that we have a lock on the sattelite, in the luggage compartment. * Pressure transducer has been calibrated on April 20, 2010. Need to be installed. * New Honeywell pressure transducer and bench cable has been purchased. * <del>TASK: Calibration and install new pressure transducer to make nose boom static pressure measurement.
  • There where several issues with the Applanix. The Serial cable needed to be a null modem cable. The cable needed to be connected to Comm port 2 instead of Comm port 1 on the back of the M300. The correct formula in the txt.300 table needed to be used for the Applanix time.
    • TASK :The M300 did not record any Applanix data during the March 26 flight. Need to determine why.

Hardware (Long Term)

  • Have figured out the type of character generator, camera and DVR to get. We'll work on after next flight.
    • Task: Purchase and Install forward looking Video Camera.
  • A value has been installed behind flow meter on the CPC assembly. The flow rate has been set for 1 L/min at STP (2.6 volts). We fly like this to see how it works.
    • Critical orifice has been removed. Took pictures and loaded them on the N drive labeled CPC.
      • Task: Pull critical orifice from CPC. Regulate the volumetric flow rate.
  • May 4, 2010: Figured out how to install headsets without using research radio system so scientists have intercomm and can hear ATC.
    • Task: Purchase headset and figure out intercom system.
  • Task: Raise the Flight Scientist Monitor
  • Task: Service the HVPS to increase the Upper and Lower Video Voltages.

Software

M300

  • Task: Check code to make sure the TAS on the twodc data files is correct. The March 26, 2010 flight does not seem to have correct time information.
  • No software configuration change necessary for pbp information from CDP, just need to request the pbp information. Change the CDP board table. This removed the error about the size of the CDP acquisition event; however, not getting data correctly in real time. Need to see what else is different between the CDPpbp test tables and current ITASCA tables.
    • Need to check the DMT manual to see if there is a configuration change that is necessary to have the probe send particle by particle information. The March 26, 2009 flight did not have any good CDP data. Set data size to 30 channels with pbp information but only recorded 156 bytes and not 1186 bytes. Need to test things so we are sure tables are configured right to get particle by particle information.
      • Task: Configuration tables to work correct for CDP with particle by particle information.
  • May 4, 2010: Created tables that correctly display 2DC images.
    • Task: Update M300 tables for correct display of 2DC images.
  • The acquisition of data did not include type 7, 8, 9 data. Makes postprocessing of the date impossible. Fixed tables and will test.
    • Task: Update M300 tables to correctly display HVPS data.
  • Augie said that the gpstimesync command will not work with our system. Will try to use gpstimesync with aircraft GPS serial data.
    • The gpstimesync command which is run automatically before the M300 software is started at boot time is not able to get time correctly. Need to determine the type of data that need to be define as an option in the gpstimesync command. Will send Augie and email to see if it is possible.
      • Task: Get time sync command working to enable syncing data before M300 software starts.
  • Task: Get the Gust Probe box temperature working.
  • Task: Apply correct EdgeTech dew point calibration for display.

Post Processing

  • Code has been added for processing data when particle by particle information is present; however things are not working with M300 tables to get particle by particle information. There is no probe configuration setting, just need to request data you want.
    • Need to look at DMT manual and see if there is the probes configuration has to be changed.
      • Task: Add code to do particle by particle CDP processing.
  • Got postprocessing code working for March 26, 2010 flight. The TDL dewpoint and Edgetech dewpoint do not agree. Need add correct calibration to processing.
    • Task: Get code working to process the TDL data.
  • Task: Add code to decode binary Rosemount Icing Detector data.
  • Task: Add code to apply new inlet pressure calibration value.
  • Task: Add code to process the aircraft GPS data.
  • Code for processing time code generator data has been added. The output data does not have data at 1Hz frequency. Maybe there is something that can be changed.
    • Add code to process the time code generator data.
  • Added code to correctly apply the calibration data. Data range was -60 to 40 C, after April 21, 2010 it was changed to -70 to 30 C. Postprocessing code now uses correct value; however, the temperature and dew point temperature do not agree well. Need to add get processing of TDL data to work and compare TDL dew point value to see if the problem is with the temperature or dew point measurement.
    • Apply correct EdgeTech dew point calibration.

Documentation

  • Create full power distribution budget, including what is running on each of the 4 AC circuits.
  • Create PCASP probe Instrument Wiki page. Add information about the probe and the current problems we are having.
  • Add all pressure transducer description information and calibration information to the Pressure Transducer Wiki page.
  • Revise Flight Engineer Instrument Check List before next flight, include information on power distribution settings.
    • Create Flight Engineer Instrument Check List
  • Create Poster (36w x 32h) Describing Aircraft and Instruments.
